What is Cub Scouting

Cub Scouting is the program developed by the Boy Scouts of America for both boys and girls in grades K-5.  Cub Scouts emphasizes hands-on activities, character development, citizenship, service, and of course fun!  You can learn more about the Cub Scout program in general at: scouting.org/programs/cub-scouts/scouting.org.

Membership

Cub Scouting is open to all boys and girls in grades K-5.  Scouts are members of a den that usually consists of around 6-8 boys or 6-8 girls, all in the same grade.  Dens usually meet twice a month during the school year.  All the dens together make up the Pack. The Pack meets once a month, in addition to holding events such as hikes, camp outs, and other outings.

Volunteer Leadership

Cub Scouts is a volunteer-run program.  Den leaders are very often a parent of a member of the den.  The pack is led by a volunteer Cubmaster, Den leaders, and a Pack Committee made up mostly of parents of scouts.  The Cub Scout program is only possible with the active participation of the Scouts’ families.

Activities

Cub Scouting means “doing.” Everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have the boys and girls doing things. Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting – citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness. Many of the activities happen right in the den and pack. The most important are the weekly den meetings and the monthly pack meetings.
